Spicy Lentil Soup (From Passionate Homemaking)

Thanks to my SIL Autumn for sharing this recipe! We tried it last night and it is delicious! If you use split peas, it must be cooked all day, or else blend the full contents in the blender to break down harder peas. That has worked for me. I increased the cumin and salt to my taste. This makes enough for 3-4 meals in our house. Nice for the freezer! -- posted by evangefit

Chicken Maryland With a Baked Mustard Crust

From our local state paper and submitted by a gourmet butcher Vince Garreffa, it sounds so good, hoping to try it shortly so times are estimated. His intro was "The "love of my life" cooked this for me using turkey legs for Christmas. I loved it so much that I cook it often with chicken because it's quick, easy and tasty. Maybe you can use this recipe with turkey Marylands for Christmas in July but do cook them for longer because the bigger size of the Marylands." Christmas in July reference is that it is our winter and some people celebrate with a traditional Christmas lunch/dinner then and will do cold fare at Christmas during our summer. -- posted by I'mPat

Spicy Spears

An easy, healthy alternative to french fries. This is basic recipe, but feel free to test it out with your favorite spices and potatos and toppings for a custom version! I've added sweet potato to up the nutrition value and the tinest bit of delicious cheese. NOTE: The amount of potatos used are an average of what two people eat as a side dish. -- posted by TheMixingBowl

*the* Cake

This will become your go-to basic cake recipe if you think a cake [or muffins or cupcakes] should be moist and rich, leaning towards the texture of a coffee cake. If you're a chiffon and angelfood person then stick with your old lame dry recipe. The secret is vanilla yogurt, and the added bonus is what that does to the nutritional profile of the cake. I don't like this cake specifically because it's "healthier" than others. It's just one of those cases where you never miss the fat! This recipe is a good start for all sorts of culinary creativity. Experiment with different mix-ins, different flavors of yogurt, and different formats. Chocolate chip cake? Blueberry muffins? Lemon-poppyseed muffins using lemon yogurt? Cinnamon-raisin-praline coffeecake? Just remember to keep the mix-ins as small as possible [mini chocolate chips, finely chopped nuts] so they don't sink in the batter. I'm telling you, it will be your go-to base for all sorts of baking! -- posted by [Entropy]
